Train Stations in Budapest

You can easily access all the major tourist attractions of Hungary from Budapest by train, whether you are wanting to experience a wellness weekend at a thermal hotel or a social event at lake Balaton for a couple of days. The trains timetables are realitively accurate and the price for travel to these destinations are reasonable and there are different kinds of discounts dependant on age. There are Inter City trains operating between Budapest and other major cities frequently throughout the day. The three main train stations of Budapest have underground connections so they can be easily reached. It’s a great experience (and a kind of “time travel”) to try the steam engine Nostalgia which has been operating since the beginning of the 20th century, which goes to Esztergom of the Danube bend on weekends.

If you come to Budapest by train or you wish to leave Budapest by train, you can find some useful information about the main railway stations of the capital at these stations. You can order our transfer service to the railway stations as well.

South railway station (Déli pályaudvar):
The trains to West Hungary, Vienna and to the Lake of Balaton leave from here. The second most busiest railway station of the capital, it’s located on the border of the 1st and the 12th district, next to the Moscow square (Moszkva tér).
Access by public transportation: Here is the railhead of the underground line nr2 (red color code) and it can be easily reached form the Moscow square (Moszkva tér) by trams nr 18, 59 or 61.

West railway station (Nyugati pályaudvar):
The oldest train station of Budapest where the first train departed from here to Vác in 1846. The station’s building was made by the design plans of Gustave Eiffel, it is an architectural speciality in itself. It’s located on the Pest side near to Margharet bridge (Margit- híd) on the Great Boulevard (Nagykörút). Right next to it you can find one of the biggest shopping malls in Central Europe: The West End Shopping Center.Do you like “Dinkey line”(narrow gauge) trains? From this railway station trains are departing in the direction of Szob every hour. Get off in Kismaros and take the “Dinkey line” train to the tourist center of Börzsön mountain, to Királyrét!
Acces by public transportation: It can be reached by the underground line nr3 (blue color code) or by the trams nr4 or nr6 (we would not recommend the trams during rush hours, espeacially travelling with luggage).

East railway station (Keleti pályaudvar):
The most busiest railway station of Budapest, all the trains to the North , East Hungary and to the ex socilasist countries (Ukraine, Russia, Romania) are departing from here. At the front of the building is the statue of Gábor Baross, the founder of the train lines in Hungary.
Acces by public transportation: Underground line nr2 (red color code) has got a stop here (Keleti pályaudvar). You can also get there by buses number 7, 73 and 173 (not recommended with big luggage).

There are other “special trains” in Budapest as well: the Children’s Railway (ex- Pioneers’ Railway, the “Gyermekvasút”), the renovated Funicular Train in the castle district (Budavári sikló) and the Cogwheel Train (Fogaskerekű Vasút)
